Contracts and renewals

Business energy contract ending? Start with the dates.

You do not need to wait for the final bill to review your options. Find out which date is ending, what happens afterwards, and whether the next offer suits the way your business uses energy.

Your renewal checklist

Three dates worth checking

  1. Contract

    When does the term end?

Ask what happens afterwards and whether notice or exit fees apply.

  2. Benefit

    When does the discount end?

A benefit can expire while the contract continues. Confirm the next price.

  3. Price

How long is the rate fixed?

A contract term does not necessarily mean the price is fixed for that period.

Record the dates from your agreement and retailer. This checklist does not schedule reminders or authorise a switch.

Check which date is actually ending

The end of a contract, a benefit period and a fixed-price period can mean different things. A discount may stop while the underlying contract continues. A fixed contract length does not necessarily fix the usage rate.

Check the original agreement and any renewal notice. If the bill is unclear, ask the retailer to confirm the relevant dates, the rates after expiry and any action you need to take. Set your own reminder rather than relying only on a notice.

Prepare before you ask for offers

  • Gather recent bills, ideally covering a full year if your business is seasonal.
  • Confirm the supply address, network, meter identifier and current tariff.
  • Note planned changes such as longer trading hours, equipment, solar or a move.
  • Ask for any exit fee, notice period or minimum term in writing.

Compare the renewal with alternatives

Use the same energy consumption and GST basis across offers. Compare daily supply charges as well as usage rates. Review time bands, demand charges, solar credits, payment conditions and fees separately.

A fictional offer that is $300 cheaper in annual usage and supply costs would have a $240 first-year difference after a confirmed $60 exit fee, before any other changes. That example does not establish what your own contract charges. Ask for a complete written offer before accepting.

Confirm the handover and check the next bill

  • Ask what happens if you do nothing. Do not assume the existing discount or price continues.
  • If changing retailer, confirm the transfer process and timing before cancelling existing arrangements.
  • Keep the accepted offer and check the first new bill and the old retailer’s final bill.
  • Record the next benefit or contract review date. Our website does not automatically monitor your account or switch your supply.

When a standard shortlist is not enough

Large commercial contracts, multiple sites, embedded networks and complex tariffs can require a fuller review. An online usage-and-supply estimate does not verify every fee or contractual obligation.

Our service compares a retailer panel, not the whole market. An enquiry records your preferred plan for discussion and does not authorise a switch. Government comparison options are also linked in our coverage guide.
