Business energy comparisons for retail shops

For a retail shop, compare energy costs using the hours you trade and the tariff on your bill. Lighting, cooling and any refrigeration affect usage. A low advertised rate can still be offset by a higher supply charge or other fees.

Street-front shop or shopping-centre tenancy?

Check who sends your bill. A shopping-centre tenancy may be in an embedded network and billed by an operator rather than a standard retailer. The usual published retail plans may not be available to that site.

Our shortlist does not establish embedded-network eligibility. Confirm the supply arrangement with the centre or network operator before assuming you can switch to a plan shown elsewhere.

Match the tariff to trading hours

Review weekday, evening and weekend usage. A store with late-night trading can have a different time-of-use pattern from a shop open only in the daytime. A holiday or stocktake period may not represent normal annual use.

For small low-usage premises, the daily supply charge can make a meaningful difference. For sites with several large systems, check demand charges as well as the usage rate.

Food retail needs a separate look at refrigeration

The Australian Government’s food and grocery guide identifies refrigeration as a major energy use. Keep overnight load in mind when comparing tariffs. Do not estimate all electricity use from opening hours alone.

Plan comparisons and efficiency upgrades solve different problems. Our saving estimate keeps the usage basis the same. It does not assume new equipment or reduced consumption.

How to check a shop’s bill

  • Upload a recent bill with usage, daily supply and detailed tariff charges.
  • Review your postcode and distributor before comparing. Each store should be checked for its own network and usage.
  • Compare up to three available plans side by side. Estimates include GST, usage and supply, with exclusions explained.
  • Select a plan for a callback if useful. The team still needs to confirm meter, tariff and retailer eligibility before any switch.
